Happy Father's Day God
What is this thing called “a Father’s Love”?
Is it a closed fist inside of a glove?
Is it cutting words sharp as a knife?
from the lips of one who's in charge of your life?
Is it rage that splits the quietest night?
Or someone always trying to pick a fight?
How do I learn this thing that others possess?
Is there a ruler of order in this chaotic mess?
Is He waiting to punish me because I’m bad?
Or is that a lie taught to me by my dad?
I had believed it for so very long
That God enjoyed telling me when I was wrong.
I thought he was so very far away
and would never listen to what I had to say.
Oh, to be able to pick up the phone
and hear a kind voice instead of a groan.
..but I heard a promise that was said
In the Good Book, and this is what it read…
“Seek the truth and it will set you free”
Is that message for others or also for me?
So, courage I found inside of a storm
Got to know God, who took on human form
Showing only love, grace and mercy and never hate
I was so wrong about my dismal fate
God is not like my earthly dad
He’s always been there when I’ve been sad.
He showed up in nature and through kindness of friends
His love and blessings never ever ends.
He restores my soul, His peace to give,
I will not die, but I will live
to tell about this “Father’s Love”
That was found not here, but high above
So, this is my poem for me to say,
God, you’re my daddy. Happy Father’s Day!
